Innsbruck, Austria

We enjoyed some free time in Innsbruck, Austria, once known for being the powerful and influential capital of Austria. Between 1943 - 1945, Innsbruck experienced twenty-one bomb attacks and suffered heavy damage. It is also known for being the sight of the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympics. The Golden Roof or "Goldenes Dachl" was built in 1500 for Maximilian I, the Holy Roman Emperor. It served as a royal box where he could sit and enjoy tournaments in the square below. The Triumphpforte was built in 1765, during the reign of Empress Maria Theresia. She had it constructed on the occassion of the wedding of her son, who later became Emperor Leopold II. The architect built the arch to express the joy of Leopold's marriage, as well as sadness, due to the death of Emperor Franz Stephan I. He created the northern side to express joy and the southern side to represent mourning.
